Monthly Musings On The Farm-August

Welcome to the first addition of monthly musings on the farm!  So many exciting things have been happening this summer.  Lots of newborn chicks have joined the brood.  Bernice the Buff Orpington gave birth to three healthy babies in mid July.  It has been so exciting to watch them grow up and start to become accustomed to life on the farm.  Then, in the beginning of August, we were surprised with another baby Dutch Bantam chick.  The more the merrier I say!

This marks our Toulouse geese Phoebe and Finn's second summer enjoying life on the farm.  Finn has become quite the guard dog, especially when it comes to protecting Freckles and Little Wing, the Pekin ducks.  Phoebe is on the shy side and enjoys bathing in the pond and staying close to home.  Finn and the ducks love to adventure, sometimes as far as the neighbor's yard across the pond. They then have to be lured back over to the field with some watermelon.  We frequently have to reign in their daily explorations.  The goats have been keeping cool during the day in the barn, while the chickens like to find a parked car for shade.  Come join me and take a glimpse at all the animals on the farm!

Do you have a farm or homestead of your own?  I'd love to hear what's happening in your neck of the woods! Leave a comment here or tweet me @thefreckledrose.  Make sure to come back next month to see updates on the chicks and more monthly musings from the farm.

The first post was fun. Your critters look happy and healthy and that is nice to see. We live in a rural area in the woods in Northwest Florida and have ducks and geese. You are right, they are wonderful pets and I love and enjoy them a lot. Would love to see how you house your ducks, geese and chickens and see more pictures of the goats. Thanks for taking the time to do this blog…..looking forward to future posts!

Sunshine is adorable. I miss my chickens, but I’m looking forward to getting more in the spring after a year without them!

LOVE your blog! I can get my farmstead fix here, and I love it! Your photos are wonderful and I loved the video…that ever watchful Mom making sure her chicks are safe as they eat. The chicks are just precious. All your farm animals are just wonderful, and the photos are beautiful!

No homestead here in the burbs even though we are pretty rural. I wish we could have chickens…they are such fun and great for gardens…those chicks are too adorable.
