Fall Fun At The Big E Fair

Every September it's a family tradition to attend The Big E fair in West Springfield, Massachusetts.  I've technically been attending since before I was born while I was still in my mom's belly!  The annual fair, also known as The Eastern State ExpositioTicketn, is filled with entertaining activities that will keep you wanting to go back year after year.  The food is something of legend, not to mention the options here tend to be endless.  From the melt in your mouth sugar covered mini donuts to the daydream worthy Maine baked potatoes.  You will not be leaving this fair hungry.  Hours of fun can be spent on the carnival games and thrilling rides.  It also has various craft vendors selling handmade items along with souvenirs.  The state buildings are perfect for anyone attending to learn a little bit more about New England.  This is also the ideal place to gain some knowledge about agriculture, farming and locally grown food.  From beekeeping to growing pumpkins, there is information for everyone.   Come with me and explore all that this famous fair has to offer.

Breakfast Worth Bragging About

If you want to get your taste buds off to the right start, stop and get some mini donuts from The Donut Family.  These delectable delights are made right in front of your eyes and can be bought by the bag or bucket, depending on your appetite.  When you pop them in your mouth, they are still hot and the sugar melts adding the sweetest flavor to this soft yet crispy favorite.  I like to enjoy these with a giant cup of pumpkin flavored joe to celebrate the fall season!

Touring The Avenue Of The States

While you are touring The Big E, don't miss out on the state buildings.  Each building features a New England State and showcases favorite foods, attractions and events.  It really gives you a glimpse at what that state has to offer!

State Tree: Red Maple
State Bird: Rhode Island Red

Some highlights from the Rhode Island building include carved jack-o-lanterns from Roger Williams Park Zoo and Del's frozen lemonade.  The crab cakes and the clam chowder is a must from Tucker Seafood.  You can also stop to get some cones filled with gummy candies from The Chocolate Gourmet.

Massachusetts

State Capital: Boston
State Flower: Mayflower
State Tree: American Elm
State Game Bird: Wild Turkey

Some highlights from the Massachusetts building include freshly picked berries from Mass Farmers Markets as well as chocolate bread from Pittsfield Rye and Specialty Bread. I purchased some festive fall earrings from Sadie Green's and a few dip mixes from Simply Dip-Licious

State Capital: Augusta
State Flower: White Pine Cone
State Tree: White Pine
State Bird: Black-Capped Chickadee

You can't miss the warm blueberry pie served by the Wild Blueberry Commission of Maine and who could forget the fully loaded Maine baked potato! While exploring the shops, I purchased a Pike's Original Maine Garden Hod along with a handmade bat house for my nocturnal backyard critters. I also bought a laser cut, credit card sized bottle opener from Beer & Friends for the boyfriend. They are engraved with different animals to help you open your beer in style. You can check out their Kickstarter here.  Also, don't forget to check out Buoy Sports for your own personalized lobster buoys.

Maine Baked Potato In The Making

A Meal In A Peel What A Deal

I look forward to waiting in line for the best tasting, most sought after potato of my dreams every year at the fair. When you pay, you receive a coin which you give to the servers in exchange for a spud made just for you in front of your very eyes. It is topped with cheese, sour cream, chives and bacon bits. I always make sure I get one for lunch because by the time late afternoon hits, you may have a long wait. Trust me, this meal in a peel is a deal that is truly worth the wait!

Spotting Some Proven Winners Plants

Vermont
State Nickname: Green Mountain State
State Capital: Montpelier
State Flower: Red Clover
State Tree: Sugar Maple

Some of the highlights of this building include pizza from American Flatbread Company along with a nice cup of cider from Cold Hollow Cider Mill. Don't forget to get some apple cider donuts for later! Take a look at the wonderful wood carvings by Bear's Den Carving while getting your ice cream fix from Ben & Jerry's. Still have a sugar craving? Head on over to Vermont Cookie Love and grab a Forbidden Love Triple Chocolate Chip Cookie.

Pizza Bear

I was excited to see Halladay's Harvest Barn herbal blend and dips. I first found them at the Boston Flower & Garden Show back in March. I purchased Garlic Tomato Basil, Garlic Chipotle as well as Maple Habanero dips. I also picked up some extra sharp "Special Big E Cheese" from Cabot Cheese. I also love all the Vermont Prime Emu products including the lip balm and the emu oil. I was excited to get some chocolate covered gifts including some "Moose Stuff" from The Village Chocolate Shoppe.

New Hampshire
State Nickname: Granite State
State Capital: Concord
State Flower: Purple Lilac
State Tree: White Birch
State Bird: Purple Finch

I always make sure to purchase a tree from the New Hampshire-Vermont Christmas Tree Association. I couldn't forget my furry friends back at home so I bought some patterned bandanas for Duke & Ella from CritterGear. When it comes to food, I love the NH maple cotton candy and the NH kettle corn.

Cloud Nine Delights Kettle Corn

Snack Attack

At the fair, there are so many snack worthy foods to choose from. You can't miss the kettle corn from Cloud Nine Delights right outside of the New Hampshire building. It is made fresh to order and bagged while still hot. They sell them in three different sizes and while the biggest size may look huge, when noshing this popcorn goes quick! We buy multiple bags each year to take home to family and friends, and it always becomes an instant favorite. This sweet and salty treat is sure to please!

Came Across Some Gorgeous Knock Out® Roses

Connecticut
State Nickname: Constitution State
State Capital: Hartford
State Flower: Mountain Laurel
State Tree: Charter Oak
State Bird: American Robin

Sweet treats like Michele's Pies and J. Foster Ice Cream will fill your belly. Check out Hartford Prints homemade stationary and clothes on Etsy here and show Connecticut some love.  Also visit O'Paws freeze-dried pet treats for the canine or feline in your life.

Craft Common & Storrowton Village

While exploring the fair, there is no shortage of shopping.  You can find handmade crafts, paintings, jewelry and so much more.  Storrowton Village is like stepping back in time. I bought a gorgeous sun catcher from Kira-Michael-Gems Inc to add some sparkle when the sun is shining.

Animals & Agriculture

In the Mallary Complex you can learn all about milking cows, the lifecycle of honeybees along with how the biggest pumpkin is grown.  This year, I enjoyed watching the baby piglets play while momma pig tried to sneak in some sleep.  I also enjoyed meeting a baby alpaca who has yet to be named.  He was a big hit having many photos and videos taken from smart phone and camera holders alike.  I also picked up some pumpkin seeds from expert pumpkin growers that I am already excited to plant!

Swifty Swine Racing Pigs

If you have never watched a pig race, both you and the pigs are in for a treat!  The pigs line up to run around a small track, and when they finish, get to munch on an Oreo cookie as a reward.  After the pig races, Swifty shows off his spectacular swimming skills as well as his obvious love for the spotlight!  I was lucky enough to meet and hold Honey Boo Boo, the potbellied pig.  She was very cuddly, and I loved watching her doze off as I held her in my arms.  It was truly a delight!

The Magic Of The Midway Includes Rides, Games & Giant Stuffed Donut Prizes

The Mardi Gras Parade Bringing Fat Tuesday, Floats and Friendly Hallamore Clydesdales To The Fair

I had a blast at The Big E this year, and I'm already looking forward to attending next year.  I would recommend keeping an eye out for The Sangria Shack as well as the Ice Cream Moo-Nut stand. I tried a delicious Carmel Apple Sangria that tasted just like fall in a cup.  I also had a Smash-A-Pie that was a blend of blueberry pie with soft serve vanilla ice cream from Moolicious Farm.

What is your favorite fall fair to attend?  Have you ever attended The Big E?  If you have, do you have a booth or stand you look forward to visiting every year?  Please tell me all about it in the comment section below!  I'd love to hear all about your favorite things to do and see.  Hope you enjoyed touring the fair through my post, and happy fall to all!

That looks like so much incredible fun! I haven’t been to a “real” fair in so long. I was hoping to make it to the Mississippi State Fair this year, but that didn’t happen. I think there will probably be a few things come through the Coast in the next couple of months but nothing like a huge fair like this.

Thank you for sharing it with us at Photo Friday this week!
