Monthly Musings On The Farm-January

January always keeps us New Englanders on our toes when it comes to weather conditions.  So far, there is only a small amount of snow on the ground.  Cold, crisp air with some flurries falling from the sky is an average day here.  All the animals have been adjusting well to the cold.  Phoebe, my Toulouse goose, seems to get rather confused some mornings at the state her small pond tends to be in.  She doesn't enjoy how the low temperatures turn it into ice overnight.  My goose, Finn, along with the ducks, Freckles and Little Wing, make their way over to the big pond that is not frozen solid.  

I get some giggles watching the adorable ice skating moves they attempt to pull off as well as some slippery wipeouts along the way. Nothing stops them from swim time fun.  Freckles had an encounter that, unfortunately, left her with some small wounds on her head.  We made sure to wash and clean them daily.  We also separated her from the others for a few nights so she could get better and rest.  Her wounds have healed up quickly, and she is now back to normal.  

The horses, Indica and Khalila, are staying warm in their blankets while being as feisty as ever.  When it comes to the goats, they do not enjoy the feeling of any kind of precipitation hitting them.  They have been hunkered down in the barn more as of late.  I enjoy watching each of the chickens put one leg up for awhile during the chilly weather.  They alternate doing this with each leg while staying perched on one foot to keep warm.  It's rather cute and genius if you ask me.  There are some days I wish I could hide one leg under my big coat.  They become toasty again as soon as they make there way back to the barn.  Come see this month's happenings on the farm.
