The 366 Photo Challenge 2016

The end of summer always turns into a whirlwind of activity.  It is time to enjoy those end of the summer trips, then become catapulted back into days full of action.  Some of these trips have been filled with bad internet connections.  A little frustrating for a blogger, to say the least! Now that I'm finally home, I'm ready to catch up on my photo a day project.  In this post, I'm including a whole month of photographs!  We are now in sunflower season in the garden.  I also noticed the sweet autumn clematis beginning to bloom on my fence.  I can't wait to start harvesting corn within the next few weeks!  Come check out what I've been up too lately!

I am the official neighborhood catnip dealer this summer! This is Ella. She waited patiently by my garden gate for me to provide her with her daily fix. She then proceeded to have a ball nibbling, rolling around & playing with the fresh catnip! I really enjoy giving these kitties a few minutes of fun 🐱🌱☀️

At the beginning of the season, I bought a tray of pink snapdragons from my local garden center. I had no idea this stow away pansy was in the mix at the time. Even though it was an accidental buy, it turned out to be a happy one! 💜 Moral of the story though: always double check your flat!

Apparently I grow berries in my backyard not for me, but for all of the birds and even skunks who live in the neighborhood. Every time I see one almost ripe and ready to be picked, it suddenly disappears. I think they all get together for weekly meetings and spread the word through the animal ranks that my yard is an open snack bar.

This patch of sage and oregano went wild this August. Had to walk through it to get to my crops. Stepping through herbs smells delightful! 👣

My new Rose of Sharon already has flowers blooming on it bigger than the actual plant! I'm super impressed 👏 Can't wait for this beauty to grow big. I'm already imagining all of the blooms it will have!! This variety is called White Chiffon from Proven Winners

All the feathered friends have a special bond with their water bowl. When I go to clean it, Finn charges up to me and protects it with all the might a goose can muster up. As soon as it is refilled with clean water, I think he figures out it's not such a bad situation. Then he forgets, and does this all over again. There is something about new water that makes Freckles & Little Wing very happy ducks!

It's a mountain of Swiss chard! When I purchased two small plants, I had no idea I'd have so much to harvest! This variety is called Bright Lights by @aas_winners. I ate some fresh & stored the extra in my refrigerator. Any chard growers have any recipes to share??

It's no secret I love to garden. I treat it like my personal laboratory, testing different plants trying out new seeds. I can't help but try pushing the limits and growing things that aren't really for my zone. Bougainvillea flowers & vines are native to South America and places with a more tropical climate, but certainly NOT New England. I made the decision to try growing some regardless, and it has flourished all summer! I know they do well in greenhouses, but that isn't an option for me yet. No matter how short lived it is in this climate, it's put on a spectacular show!

I’ve been invited to share the story of My Instagram name and me by the fabulous The Urban Ladybug & Three Little Blackbirds I was genetically blessed with freckles (thanks dad!) and have been collecting more and more over the years. Some days when I’m bored I’ll be looking at my arm to see a new freckle that I know wasn’t there a week ago. When you are a child, anything unique that makes you stand out is always less than desirable. You’d rather just blend in than be noticed. They were never my favorite, but the older I’ve become the more I don’t mind them. Sometimes they fade in the winter so much that I forget they are there (trust me, they are still there). When I started gardening, I noticed myself becoming drawn to the flowers with little imperfections like spots or flecks of colors. I began choosing roses with dots adorning the petals and fell head over heals for stargazer lilies & freckled foxglove. Soon, I was seeking out these speckled plants and adding them to whatever place I could find in my yard. I started to see the similarity and thought HEY! That rose has freckles like me! Roses mean so much more to me than just the blooms we have all come to love. Rose is my middle name along with my grandmother’s maiden name. Before I became a full fledged gardener, I had never taken the plunge into growing my own roses. I didn’t know how difficult they would be so I had just never given it a go. When my grandmother passed, we decided to plant a rose bush in her memory. I began caring for this new baby rose bush not sure how it would do. After lots of love, pruning, feeding and trellising it is thriving six years later! Every rose that blooms on that bush reminds me of her and puts a smile on my face. Now I grow many different roses, but none are quite as special as those. Roses are resilient, timeless and of course the symbol of love! Depending on the color you choose, they can represent romance, gratitude, joy and friendship. So my name truly represents myself, my roots and what I want to attract into my life.🌹 Would the talented Pass The Pistil & Gild The Garden like to play along?

Is anyone else extremely torn whether or not you should cut the flowers you grow in your home garden? I always buy the plants and bulbs, telling myself I'll cut them and bring them inside once they bloom. Then, these flowers actually bloom and it's so hard to convince myself it's okay to cut them!! They look so stunning in my actual garden! Today, I indulged myself and cut many of these flowers to make a nice arrangement. Now my garden may look naked, but my coffee table looks stunning with a vase full of blooms! 👌

August Calendar

Have you been dealing with some hustle and bustle this month?  Life seems to really speed up around this time of year, but I'm trying to slow down every now and again to notice the small things like my final harvests.  Are you harvesting anything or enjoying any late summer blooms?  Feel free to comment below or tweet me @thefreckledrose.  I'm so excited for apple and pumpkin picking season to be back!  It's almost time for the leaves to start changing here in New England, making for some stunning landscape photographs.  Hope you are enjoying these final days of summer.
