Welcome back to Monthly Musings On The Farm! Jack Frost has paid us a visit bringing temperatures down to the negative numbers and wind chills that would make Snow Miser smile. Water bowls freeze up occasionally, and then you hear the sound of beaks trying to nibble on the ice. After the ice is broken and the water is promptly replaced, the waterfowl are happy again. Since the water comes out of the hose warm, the ducks have taken to using the bowl as a hot tub. The chickens seem a bit confused as to why a large duck is hogging the water, but the ducks seem pleased with themselves. Whilst I wasn’t looking to make a reply, felt that having one horse qualified me to put down something! In California we don’t have the extreme cold that you have, though we do have a lake (very small) in one of the corrals, and some wild ducks and birds who look for food and nest, plus the horses who are stabled at the Ranch.
What we do have is frozen water in the drinking troughs on occasion, but it’s rather thin ice and the horses usually break through it easily enough (or, in the alternative if it is thick, we all help out and break up the stuff ourselves). None have water heaters, but I’ll bet if they did, the wild ducks and the birds around the place would find them and do exactly what yours have done!

That sounds lovely that you get to watch all of the wildlife. Frozen water can be tricky. I’ve heard that adding a tennis ball can prevent this, but I don’t know if it would bother the horses. Hope your horses are well and have a lovely week ahead!

To date it hasn’t got to where we live in, Normandy and I am hoping we can let them out in early January. In comparison the piglets are big enough to go outside for a while now and I can spend so much time just watching them play.
