Monthly Musings On The Farm-May

The hot days are here to stay, which means lots of cool snacks and naps in the shade.  The young chickens are now spending time exploring and foraging for bugs.  The two families of Canadian geese that live in the field have been taking trips to the barn to feast on cracked corn.  The geese, ducks and chickens all scatter in confusion.  They watch on the sidelines looking extremely perplexed about the whole situation.  Phoebe and Finn are molting like mad and leaving a path of feathers everywhere they go!  The horses are enjoying rolling around in the freshly cut grass.  The goats are keeping an eye on the newly introduced male turkey named Gobbles.  Come take a look at the daily happenings on the farm.

Taking our new ducklings home

What are the daily happenings in your neck of the woods?  Are you enjoying any animal sightings in your own backyard?  My birdhouse near my vegetable garden has just become filled with newly hatched house finches!  They aren't vocal yet since they are so young, but I'm excited to start hearing those tiny peeps!  The hummingbirds are back, and so is the family of groundhogs that lives under my shed.  I love getting to see all of this activity again!  Have any fun wildlife stories?  Share with me in the comment section below or tweet me @thefreckledrose.  Hope you are enjoying the summer so far!

Your pictures are so beautiful! I really should stay away from your blog, though, every time I see the pictures of your geese, I want one for my own yard. And now you’ve added a turkey. And I really want some more chicks to run around. I need to get to work! Thanks for sharing on the Homestead Blog Hop!

Our summer is still being a little shy about making a full appearance but that said the wild flowers are fabulous and when the sun does shine there are insects galore. We have no ducklings this year as my good mother didn’t lay any eggs so I fear she may be too old … and my other 2 ducks always give up sitting after a few days. I shall, instead, enjoy your gorgeous young birds from across the water! Thank you for linking up with #AnimalTales and I also found you on #NatureNotes 😉

Oh I absolutely adore wildflowers! I hope to have a whole field full someday 🙂 One can dream! My females don’t have a drake, so no ducklings for me as well. Lots of baby chickens and wild baby geese to enjoy here though 🙂 Always happy to link up!

Those babies are adorable. It almost makes me wish I lived in the country. I don’t often get to see baby birds living in the city.

What fun! It’s nice to see all the different creatures on your farm staying cool and enjoying the summer days. 🙂 I live in a pretty urban area. But, the park by where I work is practically swarming with squirrels. I almost stepped on one the other day! They’re everywhere!

Thanks Gina! Squirrels can be quite entertaining to watch. Here in the suburbs they stay to themselves, but whenever I visit a big city like Washington D.C., they come right up to you! The city squirrels don’t seem to be afraid of humans at all. Just interested in the snacks 🙂

You’ve got a lot going on there! Those geese are so gorgeous! Amazing how quickly they grow. We are enjoying the birds in our garden and feeders. There’s always a nature study going on here.

Thank you for stopping by The Maple Hill Hop this week!

Gobbles is quite handsome! What a great addition to the family. Great shots all, Angie! Summer brings the babies, doesn’t it? We’ve got several fawns hidden around the property by their mamma’s so we’re very careful when going about and mowing the high grass. I’ve heard peeps from the Mockingbird nest, but it’s much to high in the tree to have a look. I just hope to be around when they fledge! Thanks for sharing your wonderful menagerie! Have a blessed week!

those ducklings are adorable, glad the dogs are finding ways to keep cool, our garden is full of stray cats looking for shelter, food and water from the sun and there are lots of birds high in the trees,

Thank you! I could use some of those cats here for squirrel and chipmunk patrol. I need a sign that says looking for garden cat who is willing to hunt rodents. Will be payed in food!

Your photos are always beautiful! Currently we have had hummingbirds, a chipmunk that likes to startle the hens then run off, and a raccoon that got the goldfish out of my rain barrel. I’m not too impressed with him, but I guess a guys gotta eat!

Thank you so much April! That is one confident chipmunk. They won’t even get near the chickens or geese here! That pesky raccoon! They are sneaky little things. This year, instead of a family of raccoons, we have a family of skunks that moved in. Not sure which is worse.
